Boston In The Media

A day or so removed from the Boston Marathon bombing and as expected the media exposure is at its high. No complaints from me as we don’t have all the information and as it gets pieced together I know a lot want to know – a lot need to know – what exactly happened, and even more importantly – why? I just want to share my perspective on the reports I observed throughout the day.

The Undesirable:

A 20-year-old Saudi national was tacked by a bystander after the blast yesterday for acting suspiciously… while running away from the blast. And today the gentleman went through a home search and questioning by the authorities. I am completely fine with most of this – other than the media needing to repeat the word Saudi 15 times per report. It shouldn’t matter what nationality he is. Hearing that they have a suspect and doing everything they can would suffice.

After hearing two men speaking in Arabic passengers on a plane felt uncomfortable, the plane was brought back to the tarmac, and the said men were removed from the flight. I understand our panic meters are on high, but we’re a melting pot for cultures and people will speak different languages – don’t let the stereotypes win – ever.

The Amazing:

I am surprised that when I google ‘hero’ Carlos Arrendono doesn’t immediately come up as the top result. He is just that – as are the many in Boston who ran towards the explosions to assist. You are all amazing.

I know Patton Oswalt from comedic roles, and more recently from Justified. More importantly I now know him for a fantastic quote a day after the heinous event.

“I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem, but here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet… When you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye. Think, ‘The good outnumber you, and we always will.’”

He reminds me, and hopefully does the same for all of you, that inherently good is always the victor.
